Ubiquitous Capture: How to Keep Your Cashflow During a Creative Block

Most freelancers—I’d say at least 80%—work in a creative field. And most freelancers—I’d say at least 100% (even those whose jobs aren’t really “creative”)—eventually run into some kind of creative block, whether it comes from burnout, or just getting bored of doing the same kind of work day after day.

Usually, this doesn’t mean that the designer or writer in question is no longer capable of doing their job: it just means they are having a damn near impossible time coming up with new, exciting… Continue

Absolutely.

In the pre-Internet world, freelancers would typically build a base of clients in their own local area. It just made life easier to be able to drive across the city to visit a client. But with the Internet and email, there’s no reason to think about where a client is based. Geographical location just doesn't matter anymore.

Sooo... one of the great advantages of being a freelancer is that when one’s city, region or even country hits bad times, we can always look further afield for new work. Yeeha!

After four superb years in this biz, with each year getting busier, I began to worry when South Africa entered its recent period of huge inflation, rising interest rates, ridiculous petrol prices, electricity shortages and general anxiety. I figured that when people stopped spending money on copywriting (as they do…) I’d need to alter the model of my business, or at least, find some new niches into which to direct the training sector of my company.

But before doing anything, I started to suck up to regular clients in Dubai and Australia – both of which have thriving economies. I made space for last-minute work, accommodated difficult challenges and kissed client a#$, and despite the fact that the local angle of my business hasn’t leveled off at all, I sleep easier at night.

In terms of attracting global clients, the best way is a well-written, well-optimised website – and a highly professional approach that shows them you know your stuff. More on this in my next Bizcomm piece, which should be out end-October. Look out for the last, any day now. Enjoy.

So you send the customer some copy for review. They send back a quite a few rewords and changes. No problem. They are the customer. But they've made a faux pas or two. Like quoting their slogan after every mention of their company name in each parag…
